Being a sub means walking into a room where you have zero relationship, zero credibility, and about five seconds to establish control.

Every single day is the first day of school. It’s a brand-new class, and they are deciding immediately whether you are worth listening to. If you don’t take command of the room from the very first moment, the students will absolutely eat you for lunch.

That’s where magic tricks changed my entire approach to substitute teaching.

The Biggest Substitute Teaching Challenge: Getting (and Keeping) Attention

Traditional classroom management methods—like raising your voice, waiting silently at the front of the room, or trying to “out-authority” the kids—usually backfire, especially when they know you’re only there for the day.

The second something impossible happens—something visual, unexpected, and right in front of them—you’ve caught them. You don't have half of their attention or "kind of" have them. You have them completely. It’s not just attention; it’s highly focused attention.

Setting Clear Classroom Expectations (The Magic "Deal")
